Viber, the service that
lets you send free messages and make free calls from your mobile, has just had
a major steroid shot. The service is now available on desktop too, so you can
transfer calls from your smartphone to your PC – and even make video calls. Is
this the first real Skype killer?
Viber hits version 3.0 today with new
apps for iPhone and Android, but it’s the new Viber Desktop apps for Windows
and Mac that are the big deal here. You can now transfer calls from your phone
straight to your laptop if you’re at a desk with one button push, and see your
chat conversations flow in too – and Viber can tell which device you’re
actively using, so only one will bleep to alert you to a new notification,
iMessage style. You can also make video calls from desktop to desktop,
traditionally Skype’s domain.
All in all, Viber’s shaping up to become a
serious Skype rival. You can check out how it works in the video below and grab the download here.
Internet messaging services need critical mass more than anything, and since
your Viber ID is tied to your phone number rather than anything else it’s easy
to join. We just wonder what Whatsapp, Viber’s big mobile rival, has up its sleeves now.
Stay tuned and let us know how you get on with the new features in the comments
