Phone Unlocking and Jailbreaking Tablets illegal

The latest news from Congress it granted blessing on the iOS jailbreak and Android Rooting all devices; the hackers embraced this with pride. That specific amendment a few years ago to the DMCA was just temporary and since then the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has tried relentlessly to get it reinstated. This has now happened. The Library of Congress has now extended it for another three years, but with some extreme limitations: After 90 days, unlocking of new phones will be verboten and all tablet mods will still be illegal. This has major differences from the 2010 stipulation which did allow unlocking, because the Librarian decided that a recent copyright ruling means fair use rules no longer apply to a handset's OS. It also states that this exception does not apply anymore as carrier rules regarding unlocking are now more relaxed.

Microsoft Windows 8 Event

The next big tech event this is coming our way, this time, courtesy of Microsoft, and it is being held in New York City. Not wanting to stay behind the competition and to make sure that they create the maximum amount of folks interested, Microsoft has stated that this event will be streamed live to people around the world.

The live Webcast will begin at 16:15 BST / 8:15am PT (click here to see what time it will be in your region) today and will give potential customers and tech folks in general a chance to see Microsoft executives and partners go over the major features of the new Windows 8 OS. The US based software giant has choosen to hold and broadcast the event live in the hopes that it will gather more momentum for the launch.

In addition to the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft will also reserve parts of the event that will be dedicated to the Surface tablet that has proved so successful early on (at least in terms of early pre-order sales). With the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft is attempting to usher in a new era of personal computers that they are banking on being sleek and lightweight and that feel equally as comfortable to use through a touchscreen display, or with a more familiar mouse and keyboard.

In addition to the Windows 8 launch webcast, Microsoft is also holding a separate virtual Surface tablet focused webcast at 1:30pm EDT. The secondary broadcast is dedicated to showcasing the Surface hardware, demonstrating its main features and functionality as well as covering all of the different purchase options that will be available to consumers when the release date finally lands on Friday.

We may already know what Microsoft has in store for us with this launch, and unlike an Apple event, it isn’t shrouded in mystery but that shouldn’t detract from what will be a couple of great and informative webcasts that introduce some fantastic hardware and software.

Skype for Windows 8 is out!

It is now available for download the Skype application for Windows 8, with Microsoft having stated it would be unvailed in time for Friday's launch of Windows 8, the Redmond software company has made it possible to download ahead of schedule. As of now, customers running the preview version of Windows 8 can download the Skype application from the Microsoft store. For those planning to upgrade on Friday also will be able to resume their Skype activities.

This Skype version is compatible with both Windows 8 flavours (Windows RT and Windows 8 for desktop), I first saw a glimpse of the new Skype app earlier this week, and I was fairly surprised by what I saw. It’s one of the most beautifully crafted apps announced for the upcoming OS so far, considering it’s made by Microsoft, I was expecting nothing less.

Testers of the new OS have responded with positive feedback on Windows 8, but prior to the releases, those focusing on Microsoft’s progress were confused by its decision to pay such a large sum for an app like Skype. The software and technology is currently being packed into everything Microsoft sells, and with a decent-looking desktop and RT app to kick Windows 8 off with, Microsoft will be looking to make a return on its gigantic investment.

Skype for Xbox will also arrive soon as Microsoft tries to fuse it's console into the all-rounder, when the Windows Phone 8 is finally released, consumers will have many different ways to communicate with their friends and family via Skype.
