Apple Jumps Into Second Place in India's Smartphone Market

CNN reported Wednesday on new figures out from technology market research firm IDC showing that Apple in the fourth quarter of 2012 grabbed 15.6 percent of smartphone revenue in India.

Apple rival Samsung remained the top brand in the market, with 38.8 percent market share. Sony (9.4 percent) and Nokia (7.3 percent) rounded out the top four.

The research firm estimated in its Asia Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report that smartphone shipments in India were at about five million units for the quarter, up 38 percent from the quarter previous. Smartphone penetration rates in India are estimated to be lower than 10 percent.

IDC's estimates jibe with prior reports from the firm that Apple's sales in the country had quadrupled.

The sales boom is due to increased efforts on Apple's part to make its premium-priced smartphone offerings available to Indian consumers. Using lessons learned in China, Apple has begun offering installment-based payments for Indian customers. An iPhone in India used to cost nearly a third more than in the United States, with delivery times ranging up to a year. Installment plans make the device more affordable, and Apple has also been selling iPhones on the open market and not through carriers subsidizing the cost of the device with high-margin service contracts.

Growth in the Indian market can likely only go so far, though, with Apple's current pricing structure. To better address India, China, and other developing markets, the company is expected to release a lower-cost iPhone some time over the next several months. [AppleInsider]

PlayStation 4 to be "Very Affordable", But No Slouch

Full reveal expected at E3 2013

If the latest industry whispers are to be believed, development kits for the PlayStation 4 are currently being sent to game studios, ahead of a formal announcement at E3 2013.

Sony's next-generation console, codenamed Orbis, aims to spit out 1080p games in 3D at 60 frames per second with "no problem" at all. It will be powered by a combined CPU and GPU based on AMD's A10 APU series, and will contain a Blu-ray drive.

Sources told VG247 that the PS4 will be a machine fit for "today and tomorrow's market" - "very affordable" but by no means "a slouch."

A full unveiling is expected to take place next June in Los Angeles. [Spong]

iPad mini the Ideal Second Screen Companion?

One thing that’s become apparent about the iPad mini during my past few days with it is just how well it fills the role of a second screen device. The iPhone and the iPad both have their merits as a companion while lounging around and watching TV, but the iPad mini hits the sweet spot of portability, power and connectivity for that use case. Fellow TC writer MG Siegler already explained why he thinks the iPad mini will likely overtake the full-size iPad as the sales leader for Apple, and I agree 100 percent, but zeroing in on its second-screen suitability might help convince those who still doubt that the smaller iPad will eventually take the crown.
Second screen experiences are increasingly common; startups like Fanatix, GetGlue, MOVL, and countless others are developing platforms and apps to help users get more out of their TV viewing experiences, and networks are encouraging hashtag campaigns and turning to Twitter to leverage the conversations already happening there. A recent Nielsen report showed that 86 percent of smartphone owners, and 88 percent of tablet owners use their devices while watching TV, and smartphone ownership in the U.S. recently crossed the 50 percent threshold, meaning a huge number of TV viewers are dividing their attention. Second screen isn’t a trend to watch; it’s a living, breathing phenomenon that’s already arrived.
Before the iPad mini arrived, the iPad was the perfect venue for reaching out to TV viewers with value-add experiences. Users of Apple’s tablet tend to be more affluent, more receptive to online advertising and more likely to spend money on their devices. If you’re losing eyeballs during commercial breaks to mobile devices, in a best case scenario you’re driving additional content complete with related promotions from your advertising partners to those same devices, and in a perfect world, those audiences fit the demographic tendencies of iPad owners.
While it’s too early to tell for sure, I’m willing to bet the iPad mini’s user base will resemble the iPad’s, more so than it’ll look like the ownership population of cheaper, Android-based devices. And because of the iPad mini’s key areas of difference compared to the iPad (over 50 percent lighter, 23 percent thinner), it’s a much more convenient device to pick up and put down frequently while watching TV programming. Plus, it has access to the same software library as its bigger cousin, meaning developers don’t necessarily need to go back to the drawing board to create second screen apps for a new form factor.
The iPad mini’s size makes it a take-anywhere device, and its screen real estate ensures that users won’t just give up on engaging with content that might involve a lot of reading or might be better handled on a desktop than on a tiny smartphone screen. And the device isn’t compromised in terms of connectivity or capabilities, either; the cameras are good, it’s got Bluetooth, optional cellular connectivity and all of the AirPlay capabilities of its bigger sibling, all of which could potentially be leveraged by developers to make second screen activities more engaging.
In reality, the iPad mini is better for a number of use cases than its larger predecessor, but it seems like the perfect couch companion after a few days of thorough testing of that theory. With mobile tech moving steadily towards a place of prominence in the living room, watch for the iPad mini to become the pace setter  in this key changing facet of home entertainment. [Tech Crunch]

Conan O'Brien is Back Again - Apple iPad mini Spoof

Conan O'Brien is back with another great spoof video, once again making fun of Apple's growing lineup of iPad's He mocks Apple's talking head-style promotional videos that mix product shots with brief statements by Apple's designers and engineers. In the clip, TeamCoco mentions several models to accompany the iPad mini that offer different screen sizes with "barely different options," including one the "barely fits in the door."

Have a look at it bellow:
