Whenever a new
jailbreak is released, Apple is usually pretty quickly off the mark in
releasing a new update to plug the exploits which made said jailbreak possible
in the first place. But this time around, it looks as though the 23MB update
for the iPhone 4S does little more than it purports, in fixing a few lingering
cellular issues.
So, iPhone 4S
users suffering with those aforementioned cellular issues can breathe a sigh of
relief, as the potentially agonizing decision regarding whether to continue
enjoying a jailbreak or apply a fix is not needed – you can have the best of
both worlds. The Evasi0n tool for jailbreak iOS 6.1
will be updated in the very near future to support those on the newer 6.1.1
firmware, so you can either wait for the update to appear before updating, or
simply persevere without the jailbreak for a minimal amount of time. As per a
tweet by Evad3rs member Planetbeing:

Apple released 6.1.1 for the 4S only today. The JB still works fine. We
will release an updated evasi0n that recognizes it as supported.
It’s certainly
surprising to see Apple release a post-jailbreak firmware update without
plugging the exploits, but there is certainly no room for complacency. It may
just be that, seeing as the bugs ironed out in iOS 6.1.1 only apply to those on
the iPhone 4S, it would be better to prepare a universal update like 6.1.2 or
6.2 to end the jailbreak, and there can be little doubt Apple intends to
distribute such a release sooner rather than later.
Still, it seems
somewhat gratuitous of Apple to allow iPhone 4S users to enjoy a smoother
cellular experience for their iOS 6 untethered jailbreak, and I am sure many of
you wielding the maturing smartphone will duly oblige.
Last week’s iOS 6.1.1
beta 1 seed for all iOS devices didn’t patch the Evasi0n exploit either. We
also posted a detailed tutorial on how to jailbreak iOS
6.1.1 beta 1 untethered on older A4 powered devices using Redsn0w +
Evasi0n combo.
As was the case with the
initial Evasi0n jailbreak, it is highly recommended you run a fresh install of
iOS 6.1.1 before proceeding with the jailbreak. Although the updated Evasi0n
tool hasn’t been released just yet, it’s best to get yourself prepared to avoid
any potential hiccups when it does. Download iOS 6.1.1
here, and we’ll be sure to let you know just as soon as the update has been
released by the Evad3rs team. [RedmondPie]
