ARM-powered chips can be found in a wide
range of electronics – including games consoles, mobile phones and even laptops
like the Samsung Chrome-book – and they’re about to get a lot more
useful thanks to the diminutive Freescale KL02 – the world’s smallest ARM chip.
It measures just 1.9mm x 2mm and is so dinky
it may even make it into tech which can be swallowed, allowing doctors to
easily investigate mysterious illnesses inside the body without actually having
to cut open the patient.
Other uses include turning seemingly
non-techy objects – such as shoes, pens and toothbrushes – into intelligent
devices which make your everyday life that little bit easier. It also means
that tech which currently relies on ARM chips can be made even smaller, which
could lead to pint-sized mobile phones, for example.
There’s almost no limit to what a chip this
size could achieve, and before long your routine health check could involve
swallowing a tiny computer powered by a KL02. A scary thought, perhaps? Let us
