Microsoft to Release Windows 8.1 as a Free Update For Windows 8 And Windows RT, Preview Release Date is June 26

Windows Blue is going to be called Windows 8.1 and will be released as a public preview on June 26, Microsoft revealed today. While the organization  remains quiet about what precisely is going to transpire from Windows 8.1 (boot directly to desktop? Start menu's regression?), Microsoft says that Windows 8.1 “may help it to provide the next-gen PCs and tablets with our OEM counterparts and to provide the experience customers need and will envision moving forward.” The update is going to be designed for Windows 8 desktops, laptops and the ARM-based Windows RT.

June the 26th marks the beginning of Microsoft's Build dev gathering in San Francisco, therefore the date is clearly not a total shock, considering the fact that Microsoft may wish to get its developer ecosystem to begin work on with Windows 8.1 as quickly as they possibly can. The update, Microsoft says, is going to be delivered through the Windows Store.

Microsoft, their CFO Tami Reller said at the JP Morgan Technology, Media &Telecom Conference in Boston today, desires to continually update Windows to generate “a richer experience” for the customers.

Today's announcement arrives after several days of build-up, including quotes by Microsoft's corporate VP of communications Frank X. Shaw about how in fact Windows 8 has been doing much better compared to the reports we have been seeing. It will also clear out months of speculation around once we would see the initial preview of Windows, although first day of Build always seemed a reasonable date.
