Amazon’s not the only player in the
e-reader game: upstart British rival Kobo
has just unleashed a counter attack on the US online giant. Meet the Kobo Aura
HD, a premium e-reader with what the company is claiming is the world’s sharpest
E Ink display.
We’ve always had a soft spot for
Kobo, whose solid e-readers have managed to even undercut Amazon, while
delivering much of the same experience. With the Kobo Aura HD, the company’s
moving upmarket though: this £139.99 gadget for bookworms comes with souped up
specs, including a scorchingly fast 1GHz processor. It connects over Wi-Fi to
Kobo’s online shop stuffed full with more than three million titles, but with a
hearty 4GB of storage for your digital library, which you can expand a further
32GB with a memory card, you shouldn’t run out of space for your purchases.
The big news however is the screen.
At 6.8-inches, it’s significantly larger than most e-reader displays, but it’s
also sharper too, with a dpi resolution of 265 – by contrast, Amazon’s
otherwise superb Kindle Paperwhite clocks in at a blurrier 212. If digital fuzz
is what’s stopping you from making the jump from paperbacks, this might just be
the incentive you need to switch.
