Cydia is Running on 14 Million iOS 6 Devices Since The Beginning of February!

Jay Freeman (Saurik) Saturday morning shared some interesting numbers about the iOS 6 jailbreak, which pod2g then Tweeted for the public to see.

According to the iOS hacker, 14,051,500 unique iOS devices running iOS 6 have been spotted running Cydia since the release of evasi0n. In addition, in just the last 30 days, 23 million iOS devices on all iOS versions have been spotted running Cydia. Those still jailbroken on non-iOS 6 firmwares are likely using older iOS devices that can’t have iOS 6 installed on them, or they’re just not ready to upgrade to iOS 6 yet because they’re happy with their older jailbreak.

14 million people is a lot – this number definitely lays to rest any rumors stating that jailbreaking is "dead;" a rumor that ran rampant from those losing patience as we waited for the evasi0n jailbreak to drop this year. A large amount of people still appear to have a large, and even growing, interest in having full personal control over their iOS devices.

Since the initial evasi0n release in the beginning of February, the evad3rs have been hard at work in keeping the jailbreak as bug-free as possible, as the tool has been updated many times (latest version is 1.5), which since the initial release have fixed multiple issues, such as Weather application crashing, longer than expected boot times, support for iOS 6.1.1 and iOS 6.1.2, and more.

If The Date on The Devices is Something to go by, Jailbreak is on The 3rd

We heard whispers earlier this week that an iOS 6 jailbreak that would unleash the power of your iPhone 5 was on the way, and now it looks like it’s right on track. A website for the jailbreak has gone live, and all signs point to a release as soon as this Sunday.

Head on over to evasi0n.com and you’ll see the website for a new iOS 6 jailbreak that’ll let you unlock your iPhone 5, iPad mini or any other device running iOS 6. It’s not live yet, but it looks like you simply have to plug your iPhone into your computer (PC, Mac or Linux) and just hit go – the team behind it, including legendary iPhone hackers musclenerd and pod2g, are testing it right now behind closed doors before unleashing it on the masses.

While there’s no release date on the site, we doubt it’s a coincidence that every iOS gadget featured on the homepage has the date showing 3 on it – which could well be this Sunday 3 February.

An iOS jailbreak is the holy grail for smarpthone hackers, who spend months looking for security flaws in Apple’s software that can be easily exploited. Once jailbroken, your iPhone can run apps Apple hasn’t approved, and you can even change its themes and interface in ways you couldn’t before.

Though it comes half a year after the launch of iOS 6, this marks the first time you’ll be able to easily jailbreak an iPhone 5 or iPad mini, and we’re sure plenty of people will be itching to do so.
