How to Turn Your Old iPod or iPad WiFi Into a Full Fledged SatNav

Wondering what to do with that old iPod touch that’s just sitting in your drawer? Plug in the Bad Elf GPS dongle and your old media player or Wi-Fi-only iPad transforms into a full satnav.

The tiny coin-sized Bad Elf GPS slots straight into the dock connector of your data-less iOS device, giving it an extra lease of life, and comes bundled with CoPilot GPS software, which lets you store maps on the device, unlike Google Maps.

That means it can turn your Wi-Fi only iPad or iPod touch into a mean GPS for around $99 (£62) and does a lot more than a fussy dedicated satnav with an unresponsive screen. The Bad Elf also has a USB port underneath so it can pass through juice from an in-car charger, keeping your iPad or iPod alive while you drive or just to sync.

It doesn’t just work with CoPilot, mind: it can also be used with different navigation apps, like Navigon, Garmin or TomTom’s iOS software. The CoPilot bundle is only available in the US right now, but the Bad Elf itself is available over here.

Atari Files For Bankruptcy in a Bid To Save a Legendary Brand

The leadership of Atari Inc., what’s left of the gaming legend behind Pong and the Atari 2600, is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in an effort to free the company from French parent Atari SA, formerly Infogrames, reports the Los Angeles Times. An unnamed "knowledgeable person" says that the plan is to develop Atari, Inc. into a "modest" business based on "digital and mobile platforms," presumably along with licensed merchandise, which CEO Jim Wilson says brings in about 17 percent of the company's revenues.

The report notes that Atari Inc.’s fortunes have been improving lately, thanks in part to the success of mobile titles like Atari Greatest Hits. And according to the Times, the company has several offers on the table for the $5.25 million it needs in debtor-in-possession financing in order to continue its operations. If its Chapter 11 efforts are successful and Atari finds a new buyer, it could possibly make a comeback, unobstructed by its considerable debt to London-based BlueBay Asset Management. [TheVerge]

Microsoft Patch Vulnerability That Targets Old Versions of IE

Microsoft is today resolving a nasty vulnerability that targets old versions of Internet Explorer and allowed a user's PC to be overtaken if the browser was steered to select malicious websites. After it was initially found last month, Microsoft offered up a few workarounds and a standalone patch to avoid the flaw, which threatens versions 6, 7, and 8 of Internet Explorer.

But today's security update should eliminate the vulnerability for good. Microsoft says that to date, just a "limited number" of customers have fallen victim to the zero-day exploit, but admits " the potential exists that more customers could be affected in the future." As such, the update has been designated critical and will be automatically installed for users that have enabled Automatic Updates on their PCs. Of course, this is also another reminder to keep your browser updated — assuming your situation permits it. IE 9 and 10 were protected from this particular vulnerability from the very beginning.
