This morning the nominees for the 86th Academy Awards were announced — and the list contains some expected names and a few surprises. Netflix continued its awards season run with its first Oscar nomination for the documentary The Square, while science fiction films made an impression as well. Continuing its recent successes, Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity was nominated for best picture, best director, and best actress for star Sandra Bullock. The sci-fi love story Her also received attention from Academy members, garnering nominations for original screenplay, best picture, and best original song.
