If The Rumours Are True The iPhone 5S Will Pack a 12-MegaPixel Shooter With Better Low Light Performance

As if rumours of what the next iPhone will and will not feature were not already reaching silly proportions, the latest news on the street is that Apple’s next flagship smartphone will feature a shiny new 12-megapixel camera and improved night time shooting.
Apple’s iPhone 5S release date is slated for later this year, and one Vietnamese blog claims to have had a tip that it will receive a much improved camera when compared to the currently shipping iPhone 5.

According to a source working for Wonderful Saigon Electrics (WSE) iPhone fans can look forward to taking some huge photographs, and this anonymous source could well be right. WSE makes camera modules for Apple already, so this source could easily be in the know.
In fact, the Vietnamese blog running the story, Tinhte.vn, also has form when it comes to predicting what will and will not make a final, shipping iPhone. Tinhte managed to confirm that the iPhone 5 would ship with its 8-megapixel camera last year, at a time when everyone else was predicting a 10-megapixel camera sensor would be used. Given that track record, and the fact that WSE does indeed already work for Apple, we’re inclined to give this particular rumor a little more time than usual.

Whilst the news should still be taken with a sizeable pinch of salt, using a 12-megapixel camera would make sense for Apple when companies like Nokia are already pushing the envelope when it comes to the cameras used in their smartphones. Apple may need to hit a home run with the next iPhone thanks to increasing pressure from the likes of HTC and Samsung, pushing the company to pull out all the stops and offer something truly impressive. A better camera, with improved night time photo-taking abilities would help to do just that.
The next iPhone is expected to ship around September time, almost six months after some of its top competition. Whether that will be a good thing or not remains to be seen, but with HTC’s One and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 pushing the iPhone hard, it could be an interesting end of year for iOS.
What do you think, will the iPhone 5S break the mold and bring forward bigger camera sensors to Apple’s famed smartphone lineup? [Source]
