Google Android 5.0 Release Date Rumour Nexus 4 With LTE Launch at Google I/O

With Google’s big I/O event just around the corner, rumors are flying as to what will be the main attraction when the Google’s top brass take to the stage. People have been suggesting that we will see at least one new Android smartphone, whilst others suggest that a redesigned Nexus 7 tablet is on the cards.

Whatever the hardware is on show though, it was almost roundly believed that Android 5.0, dubbed as Key Lime Pie, would be making an appearance at Google I/O, especially if there is indeed set to be new hardware on show.

Every hardware maker likes to show new devices off alongside a new operating system, and Apple always launches a new iPhone by launching a new version of iOS at the same time. Google is no different, which makes this latest rumor particularly interesting, if not entirely nailed on.

According to the so called ‘trusty sources’ belonging to Gadgetronica, Google’s next big Android release is set to be pushed back anywhere from two to four months, which would mean no big unveiling at Google I/O, potentially putting cold water on the rumors of new hardware being announced at the event.

The justification for the delay, we’re told, is that Google’s hardware partners such as HTC, Samsung and LG, want more time to ensure they have their Jelly Bean updates out before they are obsoleted by a new, even better release of Android that they will no doubt take months, if not years to get onto their own devices.

We can certainly understand the motivation for such a move from the standpoint of those hardware partners, but we’re not entirely convinced that any of this is Google’s style. In the past, Google has tried to push its hardware partners towards quicker update schedules as well as attempting to create a reference design with its Nexus devices. With the company so keen to improve what its hardware partners are pushing out, is it in Google’s best interests to hold a large software update back so that they can get an older version of Android onto their devices?

We’re going to suggest this whole story is taken with a sizeable grain of salt.

It’s also being reported that Google I/O will bring forwarded an updated model of the Nexus 4 with LTE capabilities and 32GB internal storage. [Source]
