Archos Releases New Line of Budget Android Smartphones

Archos is known for its line in low price Android-powered tablets and other strange devices, but today, it’s getting into the smartphone market as well. Meet the low price Archos Carbon and Platinum phone lines, budget phone and phablet rivals with dual-SIM card slots that start at just £79.99 unlocked.
Archos has three new Android phones for you: all of them are unlocked so you can run them with any SIM card or network you choose, and they all let you run two numbers at once.
First up is the super cheap – £79.99 – Archos 35 Carbon, a plastic number with a 1GHz processor and an iPhone 3GS-style 3.5-inch 320×480 resolution display, and running Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Next up are the Archos 50 Platinum and Archos 53 Platinum phones, close in size to Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Note 2 phones. But at just £179.99 and £199.99 unlocked respectively, they won’t break the bank like one of Samsung’s epic new phablets.
They’re almost identically specced five-inch and 5.3-inch phones respectively packing qHD sharp 960×540 displays, with zippy quad-core 1.2GHz processors and more up to date Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean”. At 2800mAh (compared to the 50’s 2000mAh cell), the Archos 53 Platinum’s battery is substantially larger, and could well run for as long as two or three days on a charge.
All three phones in the line run Android “unskinned” – in other words, as Google intended it, without HTC or Samsung’s distracting overlays which are supposed to help their phones stand out. If you’re an Android fanatic on a budget, that’ll be music to your ears.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Archos has tried its hand at a mobile phone. Back in 2009, it announced it was launching an Android smartphone, but the concept never made it onto shop shelves. These ones are expected to hit stores at the end of May. Will you be buying one?
